Manage a variable

AI-generated summary

Genesys Cloud provides variable management capabilities within flows to store, configure, and pass data across different flow types. Variables can be created by adding actions that assign values, with options to set literal or default initial values (NOT_SET when using default). The platform supports designating variables as secure to protect sensitive data, and marking them as input, output, or accessible across entire flows or specific tasks only. Variable properties can be edited from within containing actions or through Resources > Data, with built-in variables restricted to read-only access. The system tracks variable usages across flows, displaying each location where variables are referenced with associated actions and context. Secure variables function as write-only elements available in secure call and voice bot flows, extracting sensitive information such as credit card numbers or passwords through Extract Secure Data, Call Secure Data, or audio expression actions. Input and output designations are checked by default, though users can modify these settings. Published flows prevent clearing or deletion of variables marked as input or output, ensuring data integrity in configured workflows. The platform includes a feedback mechanism allowing users to report article quality issues or provide positive input regarding documentation content helpfulness. Users can specify feedback reasons categorized as either negative (inaccurate, incomplete, outdated content, or unclear presentation) or positive (answered questions, easy navigation, clear organization, valuable insights). The feedback form requires users to identify their role (Agent, Administrator, Developer/Engineer, Partner, Supervisor, Support, or Other), provide an email address, and acknowledge the Genesys Cloud privacy policy. Related documentation topics include Architect functionality, expression help, language skill variables, queue variables, and script variable management, which are available as suggested articles for users seeking additional information.

To create a variable, add an action that assigns a value to a variable. You can open a variable and, if available, edit its properties:

From within the action that contains it.
From Resources > Data.

Under Initial Value, you can set the literal value, or from the list choose Use default. When you choose to use default, the value is NOT_SET.

For built-in variables, a message appears at the top of the variable dialog box: This variable has read only access across the entire flow. You cannot modify built-in variable properties.

Note: After the flow is published, a variable that is marked as an input cannot be deselected as an input or deleted. Similarly, a variable that is marked as an output cannot be deselected as an output or deleted.

Variable name and description

View and optionally update the variable name and description.

Note: You cannot modify names of built-in variables.

Variable accessibility

Select whether the variable is accessible from the entire flow, or from a task only.

Variable options

These check boxes change, depending on the flow type.

Option	Applicable flow type	Description
Content is secure	Bot (voice bot) Secure	The variable is secure.
Input to flow	Bot (voice bot) Common module Digital bot Secure Workitem Workflow	The variable includes input data. The input type indicates that the variable’s initial value is passed into the flow as input when the flow starts.
Output from flow	Bot (voice bot) Common module Digital bot Inbound email Inbound message Survey invite Workitem Workflow	The variable includes output data. The output type indicates that Architect exports the variable’s value from the flow when the flow ends.

Initial value

Click the list to:

Select Literal and enter a literal, editable value.
Select Use default, which leaves the value at NOT_SET and indicates that the value is undefined.

Usages

If you have any unsaved changes to the variable, this title changes to Existing usages to change.

Usage indicates each location that contains the variable. If you are currently editing the variable from a particular usage location, the location appears in bold text. The location entry also lists the action and context use. Click a location to navigate to it.

About secure variables

Secure variables are write-only, and you can modify them after creation. They are available only in secure call and voice bot flows, and Architect reads secure values from the Extract Secure Data action, Call Secure Data action, and from audio expressions. Use these actions to extract and call sensitive information from one or more secure variables, such as a credit card number entry or a password.
